  • Sometimes a patient doesn’t want a performance-they want to talk.  They want to vent their feelings with someone who is neither family nor medical personnel.  If so, give them an ear, but proceed with caution.  This is not the time to take over the conversation with your experiences unless they request it.

  • I came across many people who found  my presence unusual and even unnecessary.  This didn’t stop me from skipping and juggling through the long hallways with music on my way to the children’s ER.  Some housekeepers and nursing personnel found it refreshing!  Thankfully, caregivers commonly tend to have the best interest of the patients in mind and I got a few requests to visit adult patients as well.

  • During the course of a shift, hospital clowns will often be called upon to assist a nurse or technician with a procedure.  No, they aren’t expected to draw blood or take vital signs, but their presence is sometimes requested at a moment when a patient is about to suffer some pain or be made very uncomfortable.

  • Our local Big Apple Circus Clown Care Unit utilized all their magic, juggling and musical skills at every opportunity to entertain patients, families and employees in our children’s hospital.  We also improvised verbal gags and did pre-planned skits to vary our performances in each patient room and common area, but we never underestimated the power of a silly riddle.

  • At this time of year, many people were also moved to do something nice for someone less fortunate, and there was a tendency to have an overflow of toy donations at the hospital. One employee in the playroom told us that they saved many of the unclaimed toys for those times during the year when no one would donate or volunteer, usually in the summer. One side effect of all this goodwill at Christmas time was that they did not need our services.
